How KRONES reduces physical strain with the S700 shoulder exoskeleton

The demands of industrial assembly are high—especially when working at chest height or overhead. To reduce physical strain on employees and improve ergonomics in the workplace, Krones AG piloted a new type of workstation that allows employees to work at a comfortable height. The S700 shoulder exoskeleton in use at Krones
Krones AG is a leading global manufacturer of machines for filling and packaging technology and beverage production. The targeted use of technical assistance systems such as exoskeletons is intended to be a concrete step toward reducing physical strain on employees and preventing work-related complaints.
Our S700 shoulder exoskeleton was specially developed for tasks at chest height and above the head. It provides a natural feeling of movement while simultaneously relieving strain on the arm, neck, and shoulder muscles. At Krones, the system was used in the assembly of components, for lifting, holding, and carrying heavy parts, and for handling tasks in constrained positions.
The feedback from employees was positive:
- Noticeable reduction in physical strain
- Flexible handlingthanks to integrated pause function
- Long battery lifefor use throughout an entire work shift
- Digital monitoringvia the exoIQ app

As with any innovation, there were also minor challenges for users of the exoskeleton: getting used to the new feeling of movement and the additional weight required a short adjustment period. Individual adjustment of the system to different body proportions was also crucial for optimal effectiveness.
Conclusion: Technology meets ergonomics
Krones draws a clear conclusion:
"The exoIQ system significantly reduced strain, particularly during physically demanding handling tasks in forced postures. [...] The combination of technical support and ergonomic workplace design is considered forward-looking at Krones. Plans are already in place to expand its use to other areas of the company and locations."
We are delighted about the trust and positive experiences of Krones – and the renewed confirmation that our support system can contribute to health in the workplace.
